Lots of good issues raised here and I entirely agree...sort of like how everything is "green," "organic," etc these days. We definitely have a long ways to go. I'd certainly like to grow everything I eat in my backyard and be more self sustaining, but realistically, it just won't happen. Ultimately, my meat has to come from somewhere. Same for the nuts and fruits/veggies that aren't going to grow where I live. Plus, to really make that all work, it would be a full time job...but I already have one of those. :-/

Nate - I think you're right. I'm pretty sure that it would be the end of modern culture if we tried to make everything sustainable. It would most likely be a return to pre-industrial technology and I doubt that's anything anyone's willing to put up with.

The bigger issue that I see is that buying "sustainable" will become similar to what happened with recycling in the early 90's. Namely, that it will people will think they're doing their part simply by buying sustainable and won't need to do anything else.

Thoughtful post.

Unless we all move back to using horses and wind-powered boats for transportation, almost all of our food will be unsustainable. And if we did somehow successfully move to sustainable agriculture, we won't be able to have many of the foods we currently enjoy.

I think we should just do our best to take care of the land and manage our energy usage wisely so that we will still have something worth passing on to future generations.
